Santa Barbara Wildfire Rages

A wildfire raging along coastal mountain slopes near Santa Barbara burned more homes today, as it expanded in two directions along a five-mile front. Mandatory evacuation orders have now grown to encompass some 30,500 people. Thousands more were urged to be ready to move on a moment’s notice.

The wind-driven flames have so far consumed 3,500 acres (1,400 hectares). 3,500 homes and 100 businesses are said to be in immediate jeopardy, and 75 foothill homes above the California coastal town of Santa Barbara have already been destroyed by the wildfire. The fire is raging for a fourth day now, and at least 30,000 people have fled so far, as the fire advances on Santa Barbara itself.
