It’s a “whole new world” for Walt Disney Co., which announced yesterday that it will add comic book characters to its line-up through an acquisition of Marvel Entertainment Inc.
As part of the deal, which is worth US$4B, Marvel shareholders will receive US$30 per share in cash, in addition to 0.745 Disney shares for each Marvel share they own. Disney hopes to attract a young male audience through popular Marvel franchises such as “Iron Man” and “Spider Man”.
While Marvel’s shares surged 25.15% to close yesterday at US$48.37, Disney’s shares fell 2.98% to US$26.04.
