Microsoft Surprises Financial Analysts

A day after launching its long-awaited Windows 7 operating system, Microsoft Corp created quite a stir amongst investors after releasing its first quarter results yesterday. Microsoft, the world’s biggest software maker, stunned analysts by reporting a smaller than expected fall-off in profit to US$3.57B or US$0.40 per share, compared with US$4.37B or US$0.48 per share a year ago. Analysts were expecting earnings of US$0.32 per share.

As a result of this, Microsoft’s share price jumped 5.38% to US$28.02, a level it has not seen since the start of the global economic downturn.

Microsoft & Nokia Form Strategic Alliance

Fierce competition in the tech world has forced players to try and come up with new ideas to win over market share. This is exactly what the world’s biggest software provider has done. Yesterday, Microsoft Corp and Nokia Corp formed a strategic alliance which will see Microsoft Office applications become available on a variety of Nokia’s smartphones – a move that’s clearly directly aimed at the makers of Blackberry.

This new partnership also counteracts Google’s recent move which target’s Microsoft’s business clients by offering free online software of the type that Microsoft currently sells.

Microsoft & Yahoo Agree To Partner

After months of speculation and behind-the-scenes clamoring, Microsoft Corp has finally gotten its wish. The technology giant has reached a 10-year agreement to partner with Yahoo! Inc as it goes up against the undisputed champion in the search engine business – Google inc.

With this latest move, Microsoft will have exclusive access to the Internet’s second-biggest search tool, which it will use to enhance its latest creation, Bing. While Microsoft’s shares rose 1.41% to US$23.80, Yahoo’s shares plunged 12.08% to US$15.14 yesterday.
